Cameron Highlands - Getting Thorny at Cactus Farms!

No trip to Cameron Highlands is complete without a trip to the cactus farms. Cactus farming is a popular activity and there is a vast range of cacti and succulent plants in an infinite variety of shapes, sizes and colours being cultivated here.

To many people, a cactus is a tall, spiny plant that they see in movies of the wild west. There are, in fact nearly 2500 different species and even greater number of distinctive forms. Some cacti and succulents are cultivated for their flowers, while many are grown for their shape and form. One thing to remember about cacti is that, all cacti are succulents, but not all succulents are cacti.

Despite Cameron's cold climate, these desert plants can adapt well to the moist and freezing conditions, and seeing them up close, there is more than meets the thorns. The most common cacti and succulents grown here are Echinocactus, Gymnocalcium, Echeveria and Graptoveria.

Cameron Highlands - A Highland Town of Many Charms

Last December, I travelled to Cameron Highlands with a group of friends, for a year-end vacation.Cameron Highlands is one of Malaysia's most popular tourist destinations, a collection of peaceful townships perched 1500 meters high on a nest of serene mountains. The highland’s stunning scenery ranges from towering peaks and lush valleys to idyllic tea plantations and vast vegetable gardens.

Lives up to its 'floating garden' description, Cameron Highlands is the leading producer of fresh flowers in Malaysia, with everything from sunflower to chrysanthemum, rose to carnation bloom in its cooling soil. Add to that most of these flower nurseries sit on picturesque hillslopes which blend seamlessly with the misty surrounding.

This highland paradise still retains much of the charm of an old English village and has always something to offer to those who are imbued with the spirit of discovery and adventure. It is also an area of outstanding natural beauty that provides the perfect opportunity to relax amidst peaceful surrounding and explore off the beaten track.
